Turmeric – Vital Role

In Indian culture from Kashmir to Kanyakumari Turmeric plays a vital role.

The first pooja and prayers offered are done to the idol of Ganapati the god of obstacles, using turmeric paste for devotional prayers during festivals and other auspicious moments.

  • Turmeric is one of the main ingredients in all poojas.
  • It is added to the holy water used for Abhishekam, (Holy Bath) to the idols. In marriages, and women-centric rituals, the turmeric paste is applied on the feet of women followed as a tradition for ages.
  • It is considered sacred and holy and is added with raw rice (Akshithalu), used in marriages as Talambralu.
  • It is to be noted here that this tradition is passed on by elders with a belief that applying Turmeric paste on door frames does not allow harmful insects and bacteria, thus avoiding unnecessary diseases.
  • Women working in the wet places of the house, near wells, apply Turmeric paste to their feet to avoid bacterial infections.
