The decoration of the Main Idol, Utsav Moortis and other Idols with garlands and Tulasi (basil) garlands in Ananda Nilayam of Tirumala is called ‘Thomala Seva’.
The style in which garlands are decorated dangling from the shoulders is called ‘Thomala’. The word ‘Tholmala’ is derived from the Tamil word ‘Toduttamalai’. Those who pay for this seva could participate.
But the seva that is performed in the evenings is done in private and no devotees are permitted for it. The garlands that are prepared in the flowers room are brought and handed over to the priests and they decorate them to Swamy’s imposing and Majestic Idol.
It is held for 30 minutes. It is done as Arjitha Seva only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Rest of the days i.e., on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays it is held privately.
