Annamayya Route- Foot Route to Tirumala in Olden Days

Earlier those who wish to go to Tirumala via Kadapa, used to opt for Swami Padala Trova which is on the ā€œBALI PALLEā€“ MAMANDURUā€ road. The reason for getting this name is that at the entrance of the mountain route, there are feet of Swami carved in stone. But unfortunately, they are broken now because of the greed of treasure hunters.

Of late, this route is also getting prominenceĀ as ā€œANNAMAYYA ROUTEā€.

Earlier, the Kadapa area was also under Srinivasa protected the empire. This is the gateway to enter the domain of the Lord. Since it is a threshold to the precincts of the Lord, the place was called ā€œDEVUNI GADAPAā€ [Lordā€™s Threshold] and metamorphosed into Kadapa.

This route is entirely a forest route. No other means, except to go on foot! It used to be under the petty ā€˜chieftainsā€™ during the British rule. Earlier, at the entrance of this route, there used to be a stone structure, ā€œPeddana Mandapā€ and a small pond, intended to quench the thirst of the yatris.

But now, all that is a reminiscence! From here, the climb is rather steep. On the way, we can find Chintamanu Perita (Tamarind compound). Earlier, cattle used to graze here. After its inclusion in Sri Venkateswara Reserve Forest, all the cattle sheds have been moved away from the reserve forest area. Throughout this area, there are abundant trees.

Grandma-Grandpa hillocks

As we walk, we see two huge boulders, which are called ā€œAVVA-TATA GUTTALUā€ [Grandma-Grandpa hillocks]. Yatris going this way throw a stone onto to these boulders, as part of their prayers and vows. Alas, Lord Srinivasa has to take so much trouble to fulfil all their wishes!

Since it is close to Tallapaka, the native place of Annamayya, it is believed that his heirs have used this route for their travel to Tirumala.

It is said that Lord Srinivasa meandered all this area on a horseback, looking for a suitable dwelling place. As a proof for this, there is a mark of the hoof. Devotees worship this ā€˜hoof markā€™ reverentially.

After crossing this, we can find a big pond. By now, yatris will have reached a height of 1800 feet from the sea level. Tirumala Hills can be seen from here! Hereafter, the route is rather flat.

After walking a little distance, we come across a scenic place called ā€˜YERRI GUNTALUā€™, in the grove of Eucalyptus trees. Earlier it used to be a cool tank to quench the thirst of the passing pilgrims and also of forest animals.

Eetakayala Mandap

If we go a little further, there stands ā€œEetakayala Mandapā€ [Dates Mandap]. A story is that an old lady sold dates to the pilgrims and with that money constructed this mandap replete with gorgeous architecture.Ā Actually, it was the construction by Matla Kings, belonging to Vijayanagar Dynasty time. Itā€™s a sure proof to say that this route has been in existence for hundreds of years.

One can see different divine statues and figurines on the pillars of the Mandap. We also see scenes from Mahabharat and Bhagavat. InĀ between, a magnificent statue of the Lord of the Seven Hills.

From there, we can have a bird’s – eye view of Tirumala. If we go down via Padikatla route, we will reach the road leading to ā€˜Papa Vinashanam Fallsā€™ from Tirupati, behind Gogarbham dam.

Devarakonda Route

People from all walks of life, irrespective of caste and religion visit thisĀ place in large numbers. That includes ā€“ rishis, yogis, poets, artists, sidhisĀ ā€” in other words, common men to kings.

All of them are fretful and desperate to have His darshan. Itā€™s a blend of religious, historical, cultural and social backgrounds.

People from Karnataka

Tirumala Swami is known as ā€˜THIMMAPPAā€™ in Karnataka. Pilgrims hailing from that state used to come from Bhakrapet Pass on Pileru route. They used to stay overnight in BalaVenkateswara Swami temple, on a hillock called Nemali Gundlu, and proceed on Chitticherla-Devarakonda route through a forest area called, Shyama Kona.

According to a legend, Srinivasa was fleeing along with his love Bibi Nanchari in Bhakrapet forest. The soldiers of Nawab chased and chased the couple and were weary. The couple rested on a hillock. Srinivasa asked His love to light firewood to cook food and He took a fishing rod to a nearby pond to catch fish.

Reason behind the Name – Devara Konda

As He was about pulling the rod when a fish stuck to the hook, He heard the din of Nawabā€™s soldiers. He immediately got up and threw the rod away, ran towards a cave holding the hand of Bibi Nanchari, entered it and disappeared. Since this was the hill on which the Lord trod around, it has come to prominence as ā€˜Devuni Kondaā€™ [Godā€™s Hill] and subsequently as ā€˜Devara Kondaā€™.

Recently, the Venkateswara Swami temple built there has been restored. Daily pooja and Brahmotsavas are held there with pomp.

Dense Forest Route

From Devara Konda, the route is a dense forest. On the way, we can see forests with local rustic flavour ā€” SADDI KOOLLA BANDA, PULI BONU BANDA, SYAMA KONA. This route, which lies to the West of Tirumala, was once rampantĀ with tigers. Kenneth Anderson, a famous hunter tracked a man-eater tiger and killed it there.

But presently, it is a protected forest, as part of Sri Venkateswara Reserve Forest.

Since there used to be the threat of bandits in this forest, people always travelled in groups. Once again, we should climb up via ā€œNancharamma Lakeā€, ā€œTirumala Bandaluā€, ā€œTenkaya Chettuā€ areas.

After crossing ā€œDunnapotula Pentaā€, ā€œGandralagula Gundaā€ and other areas, we reach Tirumala Veda Pathasala. Very close to it is the epicentre of Kaliyuga, Sri Srinivasa Tirumala Kshetra!
