We pray to the goddess Goda Devi, known as the ‘Mother Andal’, whose wonderful Sri Sukti Thiruppavai has always been an ornament to the Vedantas (has given great beauty to the meanings of the Vedantas), whose fragrant garland of flowers that Goda Devi has folded and unfolded in her beautiful curls, whose divine verse is pleasing to the ears, by which this earth is enlightened.

May that goddess Goda Devi, the mother of all the worlds, always shower and bless us with her grace.

Sri Goda Chatuhshloki – Verse 2

Sri Goda Chatuhshloki – Verse 2 Meaning

Mother Godadevi! Your mother is truly the beloved of the Lord (vishnu) Sri Tulasi herself. Your father is Vishnuchitta, a beloved devotee of the Supreme God. Your brother is Yatisekhara. Your most beloved Sri Ranganatha, the abode of Srirangadhama. Your sons are the wise men who have flourished by drinking the breast (milk) of the fair divine union.

Mother (Amma)! You are the one who is uniquely easy. You also shine as the extraordinary “Sri (wealth)” Godadevi. We all sing in your praise oh great mother.

Sri Goda Chatuhshloki – Verse 3

Kalpaadau harinaa swayam janahitam drusteva sarwaatmanaam
Proktam swasya cha keertanam prapadanam swasmai prasoonaarpanam |
Sarveshaam prakatam vidhaatu manisham sridhanvinavye pure
Jaathaam vaidika vishnuchittatanayaam goda mudaaraam stumaha || (3)

Sri Goda Chatuhshloki – Verse 3 Meaning

At the beginning of the Kalpa, the Lord, who is the soul of the entire world, Sri Hari, seeking the welfare of this world, himself taught his kirtana as well as the path of surrender, i.e. the path of surrender, and all the stages of life, starting from offering flowers to him at all times.

To practice and proclaim all these daily rituals, we praise Goda Devi, who appeared as the daughter of Sri Vishnu Chitta, one of the greats of Vedic practitioners, in that Srivalliputtur, which is also known as ‘Dhanvinavyapuram‘.

Sri Goda Chatuhshloki – Verse 4

Akootasya parishkriyaa manupamaa maasevanam chakshushoha
aanandasya paramparaam anugunaam aaraamasaileshituhu |
taddhormadhyakireeta kotighatita swochhista kastoorika
maalyaamoda samedhitaathma vibhavaam goda mudaaraam stumaha || (4)

Sri Goda Chatuhshloki – Verse 4 Meaning

Whatever the desire of Sri Seshasaileshwara Venkatnatha Srinivasa, the solution to that desire is Godadevi, who is always bringing incomparable bliss to the divine eyes of Srinivasa. Srinivasa’s chest, as well as the top of the magnificent crown, is adorned with that musk garland that Godadevi folded and unfolded.

With the approval of that garland, the Lord, who is glorified in the Upanishads as “Eshah sarva gandhah, Eshah sarva rasah, Eshahye vanandayathi“, always brings unique and unprecedented fragrance, joy and happiness to that Lord; the glory of Godadevi is shining in the path of development.

We all praise the mother of Andal, Goddess Goda, who is the most beloved, devoted, and beautiful of this God.

Tiruppavai

Sri Goda performed Dhanur Masa Vratha for 30 days and composed a beautiful hymn called “Tiruppavai” – comprising 30 verses. This contained the Vedic truths and is included in the Nalaariya Divya Prabandham. We all recite this in our daily Pooja routine.

Ultimately, Sri Goda was drawn to Srirangam with all temple honours, and once she reached the Sanctum Sanctorum, she merged with the Lord – and thus He was called Sri Goda Rangan, thereafter.

She fulfilled her mission as promised, and the unique features that she practised in Her Godopinasad may be summed up as :

  • We should do Keerthanam, Vandanam, Archnam, Dasyam and Atmanivedanam. It is the best way of doing Kainkaryam [service].
  • The Jeeva-Paramathma relationship is eternal and cannot be wiped out.
  • The Seshi-Shesha Bhava [i.e. the Master and the servant] be remembered as it is Jeeva Swaroopa. We should do Kainkaryam or the service of the Lord.
  • The Doctrine of surrender with its Angas is the only way of attaining salvation. This can be performed by approaching & taking the help of an Acharya.
  • The recital of “Tiruppavai” will please the Lord and yield the fruits that all of us want and is equivalent to reciting the Vedas.
  • Sri Bhagawat Ramanuja fulfilled the desire of Sri Goda and hence he is considered her elder brother. He is also called the Tiruppavai Jeeyar.
  • Temple worship includes the Pooja of Sri Goda. In Srivilliputhur (her birthplace) she remains with Lord Rangamannar. “Sri Periyalwar” attained such an honour among the Alwars due to his becoming the father-in-law of Sri Ranganatha.
  • Sri Goda’s birth star is Aashada Poorva Phalguni and is celebrated everywhere and in temples.
